What can you do for the environment in Greece?
There are 12 National Parks in Greece. In each of these areas, fauna and flora are protected, and we should follow certain guidelines.
- In protected areas (Natura 2000, national parks, landscapes) do not scare or feed animals.
- Always follow designated trails without disturbing animal habitats – human interference can cause ecological stress in animals.
- Try not to photograph animals – especially the use of flesh is dangerous for both the animal and you. A blinded animal may feel attacked and, trying to protect itself, will attack you.
- Do not pick flowers (they may be threatened with extinction) – some plants are endemic and so occur only in one specific area. Try to admire the beauty of the flora, and not take it away and cause destruction.
- Do not smoke bonfires or tobacco – remember that such actions can cause a fire moving from a few to several kilometers per hour. Even one cigarette butt can burn all of Olympus.
- Throw garbage into specific containers – eating garbage by an animal can mean its death, and decomposing plastic pollutes the soil from which plants draw the substances they need for development and growth.
- In places of habitats of endangered plants, do not use motorization – all exhaust gases contain, inter alia sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and various heavy metals poisoning the place of life of fauna and flora.
- Do not bathe in ponds and mountain lakes – this is a threat to both you and the animals whose home it is.
