Olimp
Olimp to najwyższy masyw górski w Grecji, położony między północną a środkową częścią kraju, oddzielający historyczną Macedonię od Tesalii.
Mount Olympus is the highest mountain range in Greece, located between the northern and central parts of the country, separating historic Macedonia from Thessaly.
Jego najwyższy szczyt Mitikas wznosi się na wysokość 2918 m n.p.m. Inne szczyty to Skolio (2911 m n.p.m.), Stefani (2909 m n.p.m.), Skala (2866 m n.p.m.), Touba (2785 m n.p.m.). Masyw znajduje się między dolinami rzek Pinios i Aliakmon, nad Zatoką Termajską. Na zachodzie i południowym zachodzie kończy się pionowymi ścianami o wysokości do 500 metrów. Z północnych urwisk najwyższa jest ściana Skolio, licząca 400 metrów. Deniwelacja między centrum Litochoro a głównym szczytem Olimpu wynosi 2620 metrów.
Its highest peak Mitikas rises to 2918 m. Other peaks include Skolio (2911 m), Stefani (2909 m), Skala (2866 m), Touba (2785 m). The massif is located between the valleys of the Pinios and Aliakmon rivers, on the Gulf of Termaya. In the west and southwest it ends with vertical walls up to 500 meters high. Of the northern cliffs, the Skolio wall is the highest at 400 meters. The denivelation between the center of Litochoro and the main peak of Mount Olympus is 2620 meters.
Od 1938 roku masyw najwyższego szczytu Grecji objęty jest ochroną parku narodowego, a w 1981 roku został ogłoszony Rezerwatem Biosfery UNESCO. Park obejmuje cały teren masywu od podnóży porośniętych lasem po skalisty szczyt. W parku wyznaczono kilkadzisiąt kilometrów szlaków pieszych. Są tu także schroniska turystyczne oraz wyznaczone miejsca odpoczynku.
Since 1938, the massif of Greece’s highest peak has been under the protection of a national park, and in 1981 it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park covers the entire area of the massif from the forested foothills to the rocky summit. Several dozen kilometers of hiking trails have been designated in the park. There are also hiking shelters and designated rest areas.
LITOCHORO
Miejscowość turystyczna położona na wysokości ok. 300 m n.p.m., w odległości ok. 22 km na południe od stolicy regionu Katerini, w pobliżu krajowej drogi E75, u stóp potężnego masywu górskiego i otoczonego ścisłą ochroną Parku Narodowego Góry Olimp. Miasteczko o historycznych tradycjach, z domami o architekturze macedońskiej, posiada wąskie brukowane uliczki z licznymi kapliczkami. Jest to baza wypadowa na szczyt Olimpu.
The tourist town is located at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level, about 22 km south of the regional capital Katerini, near the national road E75, at the foot of a massive mountain massif and surrounded by the strictly protected Mount Olympus National Park. The town of historical traditions, with houses of Macedonian architecture, has narrow cobbled streets with numerous shrines. It is a base camp to the summit of Mount Olympus.
W okresie heroicznych walk wyzwoleńczych w Litochoro mieściło się tureckie więzienie o ponurej sławie. Na usta całej Grecji więzienie to trafiło jednak po głośnej akcji byłych partyzantów ELAS, przeprowadzonej w marcu 1946 roku. Bojownicy uwolnili wtedy swych więzionych tu i torturowanych kolegów, wcześniej bohaterów narodowego ruchu oporu.
During the period of the heroic liberation struggle, Litochoro housed a Turkish prison of grim fame. On the lips of all Greece, however, the prison came to prominence after a high-profile action by former ELAS guerrillas in March 1946. The militants then freed their colleagues imprisoned and tortured here, previously heroes of the national resistance.
To głównie tędy zmierzają turyści wybierający się na szczyt Olimpu. Poza okresem zalegania śniegu, który może na tej wysokości padać od października do kwietnia, bezpieczną asfaltową drogą można dojechać z Litochoro aż do uroczyska Prionia, leżącego głęboko w masywie Olimpu. Znajduje się tam stylowy punkt gastronomiczny i stacja służby EMAK.
It is mainly this way that tourists heading to the summit of Mount Olympus head. Except for the period of snow, which can fall at this altitude from October to April, a safe paved road takes you from Litochoro all the way to the charming Prionia, which lies deep in the Olympus massif. There you will find a stylish refreshment center and an EMAK service station.
